Tembi Project: Sustainable Tourism, Culture, and Regenerative Futures
AGC is partnering with residents of Tembi Village, a cultural and ecological hub just outside Yogyakarta city, to develop an interdisciplinary curriculum that examines regenerative practices, community-based tourism, and sustainable livelihoods through a local lens. Tembi is known for its traditions of batik, ecoprint, agriculture, and cultural tourism, as well as for community initiatives that link cultural preservation with environmental responsibility.
Our work centers on how local businesses are using regenerative land-use and hospitality practices within a model of sustainable, community-based tourism, including local food production, composting, renewable energy, and the reuse of materials, to sustain livelihoods while caring for their environment. Through interviews, photography, video, and community mapping, the project documents how cultural production, tourism, and local economies interact in everyday life.
These materials position Tembi as a living case study of efforts toward sustainable tourism within the Doughnut Economics framework, allowing students to examine how tourism can meet social needs—such as income, cultural continuity, and community wellbeing—while remaining within ecological limits.
